At HazMat 2, our Squad/Duty Officer Vehicles are vital for ensuring rapid response and seamless coordination during hazardous material incidents. Designed for maximum versatility, these multi-mission vehicles serve not only as personnel carriers but also as key assets in our Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) should HazMat 02-1 or HazMat 02-2 be out of service.
These vehicles play a crucial role in our on-call Duty Officer program, guaranteeing that our Duty Officer is always available 24/7 to provide expert support to emergency responders handling hazmat situations. Their primary mission is to enable a quick, efficient Duty Officer response, allowing our leadership to rapidly assess the situation and oversee the coordination of on-the-ground efforts. Fully self-sustaining, these vehicles are stocked with a wide range of research materials, ICS documentation, mitigation tools, and personal protective equipment (PPE)—everything needed to stabilize an incident from the moment they arrive.
Our fleet includes three squads: Two 2021 Dodge Ram 2500 Tri-Mission Vehicles, equipped with an A.R.E. Cap and a towing capacity of up to 14,000 lbs (9,000 lbs for the smaller Squad 02), which comfortably seats four personnel. Additionally, the 2012 Ford Expedition EL SSV is outfitted with towing capabilities and advanced detection equipment, including the Blackline G7C 5-Gas Meter, MultiRae Pro with PID Meter, ARX Raman Spectroscopy, AP4C+ Flame Spectroscopy Meter, and a variety of other tools for detecting and sampling hazardous materials.
In addition to these capabilities, the squads also carry Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS), allowing for aerial assessments of hazardous environments. These drones provide invaluable real-time data, enhancing the ability to evaluate situations remotely and safely, especially in environments that are difficult or too dangerous to access by personnel.
These vehicles are also equipped with essential personal protection equipment (PPE), including NFPA-certified suits, SCBA, CBRN APRs, and a complete suit-up kit. Mitigation equipment on board ensures that the HazMat team is ready to respond to a variety of spill scenarios, with supplies like oil pads, booms, neutralizers, and specialized tools such as rebar kits and small plug kits.
With their multi-mission capabilities, these vehicles are vital for maintaining operational readiness and ensuring that HazMat 2 can respond swiftly and efficiently to any incident, large or small.
